Hanover's 6/11/05

Hanover's is a cool venue to play at, we had our first show there Saturday night, I thought it went pretty good, I was having problems hearing eveything on stage at the begining of our set, but after a few request to the sound man, it got much better, someone got on stage with us during our song "Peace", not sure who he was or if anyone in the band knew him but he laid down some rap and it was pretty cool. The club seemed to like us and after our set the sound man comes up and tells us he will be booking us more in the near future, let's hope that's the case.

I got there a little late and only got to see Freebleeders' set and then we played, I had to leave right after our set in order to be at work by 7am, the club seemed to get busy about 10-10:30 which was the time we took the stage, so that was cool to have a good crowd to play for. Our promotion guy Sam, who had been in the studio with us a couple of nights eariler said the sound guy didn't help us much and it seemed that he was maybe a little disappointed that the sound wasn't as good as the studio, but not too many clubs are, I was thinking that too can maybe be one of Sam's roles in the band, to listen to the mix and make requests to the sound guys to insure that we are taking care of in the live sound department. Overall I thought the show was a win, and I hope to play there more in the future. Thanks to everyone that made it out to support us.

David

It sure seems like time is flying by... we had a really fun show last Friday @ the Dirty Dog Bar down on 6th street. It really is starting to feel like the band is clicking. In the last month we had to make some changes... i.e. DJ JRod left the band on good terms about a month ago and we've been working hard to fill in the gaps. I think we've got tigher every week lately... that show on fri went by so fast it was like when I first started playing kind of fun!

So in the next few weeks we're gonna get into the studio and record our final 4 songs of our full length CD. Hopefull we'll be ready for a CD release by mid-summer! woo woo

-Scott

Wow its been a pretty crazy couple weeks since SXSW...

The AIA put on a great show for 4 days during SXSW, really we kicked some serious ass and the club was really happy about it. We did better than the 3 other clubs that they own that actually were official SXSW venues. Got to chill with the Real World people all 4 days and met some really interesting and crazy people!

Our show went well on Friday night, we had “i” sit in on vocals and Jose Ruiz sit in on Hamonica... very fun but those 40 mins really flew by fast.

The early show at Flamingo Cantina was also a pretty fun show, even if it was fairly anticlimatic after the previous week.

We got Antone’s tonight, Bigsby’s on Sat... and then it’ll be a month before we play in Austin again.

-Scott

Got the ad done at Figment Studios and took it to KROX yesterday... I really like that place (Emmis Communications) even if it is a corporate 500 gorilla now. I just like to sit on the couch and watch people come and go... and pretend like I’m really important and impatient to be waited on even though I already did my business :D

The ad is going to run 3-19 to 3-24 and I think its gonna be great!!!

With SXSW going on next week... everything is getting pretty crazy. Fortunately I booked the week more than 3 months ago and told my wife to look at it as a 4 day business trip. I’m taking thu and fri off from work and I’ll be down at the Dizzy Rooster pretty much the whole time except Sat day when my nephew Patrick is having his birthday party.

In the meantime, just gotta get as much sleep as I can

-Scott

We all got to meet Sydney last night. You wanna talk about a cute kid!!! She seemed very well adjusted and happy too. I think Rich & Kathleen lucked out!!

...Ate some burgers and talked some business last night... we really need a logo or something. David mentioned that he showed a guy at work my crappy little paint logo that I’m using on here for the time being and the guy winced and said he would try to come up with something.

We decided that MS is probably not a good abbreviation to use for a logo for motionside, but we all got a laugh out of the concept of using “Support MS” or “MS benefit show tonight!” for a band... it could totally be a SNL skit... Except when the crowd starts chanting “Beat MS! Beat MS!” we’d get kind self conscious about it... JRod might get pissed off ;)

Got an email from Millhouse ( http://www.MilhouseMusic.com ) asking if we wanted to play a show with them at Bigsby’s on 4/9. We’ve been wanting to play a show with them for a while, and kept missing each other last year... So we’ll probably do it.

So our schedule for now is:

3/18 - 9PM @ Dizzy Rooster, SXSW w/ the AIA
3/24 - 8PM @ Flamingo Cantina, w/ Full Service
4/9 - 9:30PM @ Bigsby’s, w/ Millhouse
4/22 - 9PM @ Otto’s, Brenham, w/ The Blake Tynes Band

-Scott

Its not life

So its been nearly 3 weeks since we seen Drummer Rich, we’re getting together tonight to see his new baby girl Sydney, cook some burgers, and play a little.... so I’m stoked about that. We have some time before the next show (3/18) so we can work on some new stuff and mess around a little.... hang out and tell jokes. Sometimes when you get into the busy mode, you miss that stuff. So I’m really just looking forward to hangin out with the whole group and doing whatever.

I had an interesting experience yesterday... Since I’m such good friends with the guy at the convenience store, Abid is his name. (I’ve been going there pretty much every day for over 5 years now, and he’s ALWAYS there). So I say “What’s happenin my man?” And he replies, “Its not life.” I say “What?” ... “It’s not life.” So I asked him to explain and he goes into this rant about how when you do the same thing every day of your life its not really life.... And that really affected me, and got me to thinking about maybe that’s a big part of the reason I do music, because you never know what might happen and that’s exciting (compared with the mundane everyday routine). Even though its sometimes completely demoralizing and discouraging, even that is better than a predetermined, every day grind that’s “not life”.

Driving to work today in the driving rain got me thinking about it some more...

________________________________________________________

Just a while ago the sky was raining
And it cast a shadow on my soul
And now the silence starts explaining
What other people didn’t know

Its not that I’ve been here for years
Helplessly torn away from my home
The raindrops remind me of God’s tears
Remind me life is all I own

Just a while ago...

Rain

- Scott

On the Radio...

Just talked to the folks at 101X ( http://krox.com ) about our next radio ad, they said the idea was fine so we’re gonna roll with it. It probably won’t be too long before other bands pick-up on the idea, but for me I think it just short of genius ... at least that’s what I told DJ JRod this morning. Essentially, we can only buy 1 minute at a time... so we’re basically putting a 1 minute song on the radio... with a blurb at the end that says who we are and where we’re playin next. Hey Hey!! For a lot less than you’d think we’re gettin 1/3 of what would amount to “real” radio play... which I have no intention of ever getting given the price you gotta pay for THAT.

The other kickass side of it is: Rick Delellis, our recording engineer at Figment Studios ( http://figmentstudios.net ) is going to do that ads for us for free and we’re gonna name drop “Figment Studios” in the ad. Hell of a deal!! So I think for starters we’re gonna cut a minute out of Jerusalem ( http://motionside.com/jerusalem.mp3 ) and use it. And we’ll do this every month (40 ads) until they jack the price up on us.

So I’m meeting Rick next tue to cut the ad, and we’ll have it playing Feb 20-24 to promote our Flamingo Cantina show on the 24th... And hopefully turn some peeps on to the song itself :)

-Scott

Antone's 2/24/05 re-cap

The show last Thursday at Antone’s was memorable... Our super-fan Jacob D. made it and we were glad to see him since he'd been out of touch for about 3 weeks... turns out he was just chillin, layin low. I got there really early so I could get a good damn parking space, and I did! So when Rachel G. showed up early, we had a lot of time to sit and talk... and that was nice.

Its always a lot of fun when you can play shows with other bands that are your friends, and to do it at Antone’s is a real treat. This show and the one we did 2 weeks previous were shows that we were able to book the whole thing, and so we were able to get a lot of our friends into antone's for the first time, and its nice to be able to do that.

The Blake Tynes Band ( http://BlakeTynesBand.com )started the show off with a bang... That dude has more energy than 3 people put together and man is he fun to watch... and his guys are awesome too. Afterwards we went ahead and cut the deal with em to go out to Brenham in April and do a show together @ Otto’s.

David Torres from Austinights ( http://austinights.tv ) on the WB was there... he’s an old friend of mine but I hadn't seen him in a long time... He was going to interview us before the show but we didn’t have time so we put it off till after the show and went ahead and took the stage.

For one... Its more than wonderful when you get to the point where people know every word of your songs... The demo we released in December seems to have payed dividends for us and it was a really nice feeling to see all the people singing along with ‘Little Sister’ when we played it... it’s a special song at this point because it really has touched some people in real life, and even though I was concerned that maybe it was too “mellow”, I guess its nice to have a change of pace, energy-wise.

Ken Tondre (of the Kevin Fowler Band) played drums with us and did an awesome job! Since Drummer Rich was in China adopting a baby girl, we had to find a replacement for this show... Ken & Rich played together a while back in a band and so Ken was glad to help us out. Turns out that Ken had recently auditioned for and nearly made 3 Doors Down... so we felt like we were in good company!

Overall, we were very happy with the show and there was a pretty good crowd of people there to see it. I always try to talk to everybody, but never actually manage to accomplish it... it means so much and there’s really never enough time to tell everyone that.

We did our interview with David Torres, Austinights, in the green room after the show... that was fun, even though I’d rather sing than talk any day ..hehe

Freebleeder took the stage after us, and those guys are some of the best dudes in Austin... great people and great songs = good times! Even though we’re pretty different musically, I think we’re pretty close to the same kind of cats as far as people go, so its always great do do a show with freebleeder ( http://freebleeder.com )

Rainsliver ( http://rainsliver.com ) capped off the night and took us home... there was a dude that wanted to play harmonica with them the ended up leaving and...low and behold it turned out to be John Popper of Blues Traveler!! He’s lost a ton of weight so nobody really recognized him until it was too late... but oh man if he had come during our set I would have been SO honored to have him sit in and play with us! Hopefully we’ll get an opportunity like that sometime in the future.

Its shows like these that I wish would never end.... I ended up staying up till the sun started coming up... just on residual adrenaline. That always means it was a good night!

-Scott
